THE OTHER MARY

THE OTHER MARY

And there was Mary Magadlene and the other Mary,

sitting over against the sepulchre.

~Matthew 27: 61

. . .as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week,

came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary

to see the sepulchre.

~Matthew 28:1

Her tunic is undyed.

Her cloak is simple, gray.

Her hair is wrapped in linen.

You would not notice her

beside Mary of Magdala.

You would not notice her

walking down the street.

You would not notice her

buying a cup of coffee

or waiting for the bus.

She washes dishes at the soup kitchen.

She shelves books at the library.

When she’s playing the piano

at the nursing home, maybe you’ll notice,

if you go to visit your aunt.

When she’s sitting by your death-

bed, maybe you won’t know,

but she’ll hold your hand,

close your eyes, get you ready

for whatever comes next.
