EXPLAINING THE HIGGS BOSON, FIRST ATTEMPT

It’s a field, not a thing.
When you pass through it,
you get mass.

Picture a meadow
with invisible pollen
clinging to an aura
until it’s big enough
to be visible.

No?
No.

Picture a flashlight turned on
in a perfectly dark closet.
Where there was nothing,
there’s suddenly dust and shoes.

No again?
Sorry.

The trouble is,
if you look at it,
a boson becomes
a really, really tiny silver ball
that moves so fast
you can’t see it.

That’s the best I can do.
Anyway, they’re everywhere
and you wouldn’t be
here without them.
I think.

Try not to worry about it.
And don’t look now.
